Solar Panel Maker Says They Can't Make It Without Subsidy

Bosch is exiting the solar power business after having lost nearly $3.1 billion since starting up its solar energy subsidiary in 2008.

Bosch will end its solar power panel production early next year, and put parts of the business unit up for sale.

Bosch's solar power subsidiary lost about $1.28 billion last year.

After the German government curbed green energy subsidies, profitability hasn't been in reach for Bosch.

Other German solar companies are feeling the pinch as well – major solar companies such as SolarWorld and Conergy are in debt restructuring talks and Q-Cells filed for insolvency last year.

The Obama administration touts the jobs that the wind and solar industry create - but are they stable jobs?
